two-and-a-half

Crisp cool August air

reminds that autumn

(my favourite!)

is just around the corner.

So do the signs

screaming

“Back to School!”

which, for some reason,

make me shudder.

My big boy will start preschool,

Laying Down

When the midwife arrived, I was standing in the bathroom, leaning on the vanity.

She told me to lay down, and five minutes later, that baby was born.

I thought I’d give birth squatting, but it was laying down that I became a mother for the second time.

Oasis

Tonight

first time (as far as I remember)

both boys, asleep, by 8:30

and husband working.

Holy silence,

thank God!

 

I sit

with books, bible, journal, pen

anticipate

this nourishment

as necessary for my survival

as bread and sleep.

 

A startling wail.

I bound upstairs,

ask “what’s wrong?”
