first time (as far as I remember)

both boys, asleep, by 8:30

and husband working.

Holy silence,

thank God!

I sit

with books, bible, journal, pen

this nourishment

as necessary for my survival

as bread and sleep.

A startling wail.

I bound upstairs,

ask “what’s wrong?”

“I need some water.”

Bring water back, kiss brow,

and hope, with bated breath

that’s all.

Tip-toe out,

(sigh of relief!)

return to chair,

escape from land of diapers and time-outs.

Immersed in blessed quiet

this I read:

He tends his flock like a shepherd:

He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart;

he gently leads those that have young.

– Isaiah 40:11

I think I can

wade again into night

to sleep

(or not)

knowing, either way –

he’ll gently lead.

Word of life, indeed!

    For as hard as this job is, He provides us with so many blessings. Beautiful. Again.

  2. Lindsay says:

    Wow, Rachel, this is so beautiful. I saw myself in your words…just desperate for a little quiet to feed our own souls and keep us strong enough for another day. Blessings indeed.

    I really loved this. He knows what we need, or how to soothe and refresh us, well before we do… jealous of your evening!
